THE DIRECTOR - IRENE DUMA

With a career in theatre, arts and film spanning over 15 years, Irene Duma has taken on a variety of filmmaking roles including actress, comedian, writer, producer and director. She is also a creative New Media designer/producer and cross-media storyteller, with an effective combination of creativity and contagious good humour.

Irene founded Strange Duck Media, a tv and digital media production company, in 2001. She is currently writing and developing two wireless games, a documentary series, a feature and a cross-platform comedy serial. Irene continues to act for film and TV, and has recently completed a principal role in a feature for Guerrilla films. This Hour Has Seven Decades was her first BookShorts production; she has also directed the BookShorts Archetypes and One Bullet Away..Irene is the creator and director of several original series for the web, including cult fave "Madame Borshka's European Beauty Secrets" for the multi-award winning site parody site "Happy Woman Magazine'. She has also written and directed the cross-media series "World Radio Webisope," which was unveiled at E3 in Los Angeles, and the short animated film "One Day."

THE BOOKSHORT

Narrated and scripted in the style of school propaganda films of the 1950’s, ARCHETYPES animated films present that single second where one exclaims “oh, I know someone like that!” Combining minutely observed, caustic commentary with brilliant artwork, the Archetypes happily illuminate and eviscerate the denizens of the contemporary urban world.

THE WORKSHOP

Bits and Bytes:
Filmmakers Crossing Platforms
Moderated by Judith Keenan with Filmmakers Sherry White, Mary Lewis, Katerina Cizek and IRENE DUMA

Masonic Temple, 6 Cathedral St.
Saturday, Oct. 20, 10am-noon
Meet four directors who have successfully transmitted their films' bits and bytes from one platform to many, including innovative media-rich websites, cell phones and television. Newfoundland filmmakers Mary Lewis and Sherry White got up close and personal with Motorola cell phones during their time at this year's TIFF Talent Lab; Irene Duma made versions of her trio of "Archetypes" shorts for the Internet, television and cell phones; and Katerina Cizek, the National Film Board's Filmmaker-in-Residence, has achieved remarkable results in the project's alternative model of media-making that places media creation into the hands of citizens - the agents of true social change. The workshop includes tactical discussion, case studies and demonstrations.

THE BLOG - Bitter Tonic Hosted by Irene Duma

Irene writes the blog Bitter Tonic -- Comedy, satire, humor, funny online videos and other ways to dull the pain, because you don't have time to search through all the hooey that's out there.

She recently returned from Los Angeles, where she was invited as a guest journalist on the set of Stephen Speilberg's new reality show, ON THE LOT, where a bevy of filmmakers have to make different genre shorts each week. She won prizes for her converage!

Irene will be covering the Festival as the Official Blogger - watch out, she'll get ya!

THE ARCHETYPES BOOK - Written by Mirielle Silcoff

"Silcoff is a good mimic and she and McLeod both have a shrewd eye for telling details like the right brand names and band names. They also have a healthy scorn for trends and snobberies, such as gourmet water and the quadruple-digit purse. Archetypes is a slim and snarky read … Like a latter-day Fran Lebowitz, or a less acidic David Rakoff, Silcoff finds the funny in our annoying foibles and implausible subcultures."
—Globe and Mail

This book is published by McClelland & Stewart.
