SEAN CULLEN at IFOA on kids, curiosity, writing, and Hamish X

www.bookshorts.com/blog ... I caught a television interview with Sean Cullen, the talented artist of comedy, television and stage. It must have been shot some years ago. In that interview he quietly aspired to realize his dream of becoming an author. With the success of Cullen's HAMISH X series of books for young readers, he has obviously reached his goal. Hamish X and the Hollow Mountain, the second work, was the focus of this IFOA Kids reading during the last International Festival of Authors. Sean's observation of the TV biz versus book-biz may even give you pause before your next boob-tube armchair tirade!

With thanks to Harbourfront IFOA, Sean Cullen, and the students of York Woods Public School and MacLaughlin College. For more bookish event coverage, visit bookshorts.com/blog. (c) 2007 BookShorts Literacy Program.

Governor General Lit Award to Smardz Frost, I'VE GOT A HOME IN GLORYLAND

www.bookshorts.com -- Now a Governor General Literary Award winner, I've Got a Home in Glory Land by author Karolyn Smardz Frost is the epic story and first entirely original biography of a fugitive slave couple since the 19th century.
BookShorts attended the event celebrating its publication at St. Lawrence Hall in Toronto in the Spring of 2007. Author / Teacher / Activist AUSTIN CLARKE provided clear insight for the significant contribution Smardz Frost has made to history.

The book is the fascinating and absorbing story of Thornton and Lucie Blackburn, two fugitive slaves from Kentucky who made a daring daylight escape from slavery in 1831. It is both a devastating portrait of the conditions and the politics of slavery and an inspiring account of two intrepid fugitive slaves whose flight to freedom changed US and Canadian history.

3-Year Old Amanda inspires Chris Lin to teach Chinese to Kids

http://www.movingstories.tv/ -- They say "write from what you know," especially as a new author. CHRIS LIN is taking that literally, but in more ways than one. First, he has created his series of children's books, MANDY AND PANDY, from the first-hand experience of fathering his adopted Chinese daughter, Amanda. Second, he is writing in his adopted language, Chinese, because he loves the language, and sincerely wants his daughter to know her heritage in a way that can only come from speaking its tongue. And last, he has so much fun with Mandy, the character and the real thing, that he can't help but infuse the page with the same spirit of adventure his child shows him every day. It's a lovely back story, and we wish Chris and Mandy, and Mandy and Pandy, all the very best!

10% of all the Internet book sales of the Mandy and Pandy series will be donated to the orphanage where Chris first met and adopted his daughter. For more information (and some adorable pictures of the live Mandy!) please visit http://www.mandyandpandy.com/.

BARRY CALLAGHAN Man of Letters, and then some

www.movingstories.tv ... There is an amazing quality around those who had the fortune to be creative in a certain period of Canadas history. Consider BARRY CALLAGHAN. He has done work in journalism, television, and filmmaking in addition to his writing of fiction, non-fiction and poetry. He began his career as a part-time reporter for CBC television news and gave weekly book reviews on the CBC radio program Audio. During the late 60s he was literary editor of the Toronto Telegram, for which he wrote essays and books reviews that were amazing for their insight and controversial candour. He was also host and documentary producer for the public affairs show Weekend, in which capacity he made over 20 short films on political trouble spots and taped interviews with international figures such as Golda Meir and King Hussein. In 1972 Callaghan founded the international literary quarterly Exile, which extended to publishing house Exile Editions. He taught at York University and mentored far too many illustrious grads to list here. Perhaps our artists of today, empowered with the access that media technology and digital everything lends, are returning to the renaissance cross-discipline talents of champions like Mr. Callaghan. We were very happy to be able to lend our small part when McArthur and Co. asked us to contribute a short five video minute tribute to this Man of Letters. Many thanks to interviewer Ray Robertson, whose BookShort Author Profile featuring his recent novel What Happened Later, can be viewed on BookShorts BiblioBlog -- http:/www.bookshorts.com/blog .

McArthur & Co. is re-issuing an entire collection of Barrys books, as well as his excellent collection of short stories, BETWEEN TRAINS, all of which you can peruse at their website www.mcarthur-co.com.

Michelle Gagnon Debut Thriller THE TUNNELS Gets Under Your Skin

www.movingstories.tv -- MICHELLE GAGNON is a fresh and confident new voice in crime fiction, and THE TUNNELS marks an auspicious debut. So says John Lescroart, and that guy would certainly be the guy to say so. Having voraciously consumed the thriller myself, I have testify to the fact that Michelle is deceiving. She is just a wee slip of a thing in person, but those pages of hers pack a real punch.

Mira was just launching their first titles at BookExpo America this year, and from the few titles I've read so far, they've hit a strong stride right out of the gate. These are gritty and engrossing mystery thrillers written by women. Yup, its a Harlequin imprint, but that little icon doesn't appear anywhere on the cover (oh come on and read em, they're a *Canadian* publisher!). For those who may have already discovered Michelle, her next book BONEYARD will be out in April.

Dave Shields and Saul Raisin Inspire a TOUR DE LIFE

www.movingtories.tv Since we undertook this interview with DAVE SHEILDS, author of TOUR DE LIFE: FROM COMA TO COMPETITION, fantastic things have happened. For one, Daves writing partner and subject of the book, SAUL RAISIN has re-joined competitive racing. Its an awe-inspiring feat when you consider that one short year ago the doctors said he wouldnt even live, let alone tie his shoes, walk or ride. Well, they didnt know Saul.

Often one looks to athletes, their strength and endurance at the top of their game, to lend inspiration in our own everyday lives. Saul Raisin and Dave Sheilds bring us something even more precious -- a brave story of miracles from a stellar athlete at his lowest moment to the heights he is reaching all over again.

S&S to Launch Video Channel

www.bookshorts.com -- This is the second major multinational to make a big committment to the filmic medium for author support (the other that I know of being Random House and their online book club BookLounge.ca) - we're *very* excited to see the industry stepping up and using the power of moving pictures -- a committment BookShorts has held since 1994!

By Lynn Andriani for Publisher's Weekly

Simon & Schuster has teamed with the Internet video company TurnHere Inc. to launch a "book-centric video channel" that will promote S&S authors and their new books. Bookvideos.tv will begin in early June, and the videos will also be available at SimonSays.com, YouTube and the authors' own Web sites. Though S&S has produced videos to promote its authors in the past, the venture with TurnHere represents a stronger and more formal commitment to using video to market authors. S&S will create videos for at least 40 authors, including Mary Higgins Clark, Kathy Reichs, Michael Roizen and Mehmet Oz, Jennifer Weiner and Zane.

Sue Fleming, v-p of online and consumer marketing for S&S's adult publishing group, said the company is drawing more heavily on video to promote authors, based on reader feedback. She noted video's ability to "replicate, for the digital age, the critical and time tested word-of-mouth excitement that comes from talking about a good read." S&S has previously used videos to promote its books—recent examples include last year's Joy of Cooking, Jodi Picoult's Nineteen Minutes and the Newbery-winning Higher Power of Lucky—but the partnership with TurnHere embodies its move "from a one-off to a more concerted or systematic attempt through the use of video to raise consciousness about our authors on the Web," said Adam Rothberg, of S&S's corporate communications department. One of the key ways people will find the videos will be via search engines; S&S is working on tagging all the videos so that they turn up when people search for an author on Google and other sites.

Cathy Crowe, DYING FOR A HOME "Heart wrenching & inspiring" - Sarah Polley

www.BookShorts.com - Cathy Crowe always wanted to be a nurse, but she never planned to be a Street Nursea title she uses to evoke the horror of homelessness in a rich country like Canada. This first-hand experience with the disgrace of homelessness turned her into a housing advocate and introduced her to the ten contributors to her new book Dying For A Home.

The contents of Crowe's nursing bag reveal the hard truth of her specialty - her vitamins will not prevent the white plague of tuberculosis from taking another life; the duct tape to fix a cardboard shelter or the bus ticket to get an elderly man to a hot air grate will not ensure a peaceful night of safety and sleep. Crowe's experience has taught her that the only thing homeless people have in common is being de-housed and forced to live in conditions of poverty.

At the Toronto launch event attended by more than 80 people and press, Cathy graciously shared the stage with many of the book's contributors, including Kerre Briggs, who captured in just a few minutes the reality, wry humour, and determined hope of those who like him, Cathy, and their supporters -- The Atkinson Foundation, Sherbourne Health Centre, and publisher Between the Lines - ensure that the issue of homelessness remains front and centre on the countrys political agenda.

Dying for a Home: Homeless Activists Speak Out,
is now available in bookstores; more about Cathy and her work is available at Toronto Disaster Relief Committee website.

Authored by Cathy Crowe with contributors Nancy Baker, Brian Boyd, Bonnie and Kerre Briggs, Kevin Clarke, The Colonel, Dri, James Kagoshima, Marty Lang, and Melvin Tipping.

Additional Video for this report was provided by David Rubinoff.

“Harry Potter” publisher plans ‘MySpace for books’

Bloomsbury, the publisher behind the hit book series 'Harry Potter', has announced that it has plans to create the MySpace of the book world. With the final 'Potter' coming out later this year, and amidst falling profits, the company sees entering the social media space as a way of filling the void.

They want to create a literary alternative to online communities such as YouTube, Bebo. Seems to me that a better use of resources would be to use tech like BlipTV, Revver already available -- one then needs only content, focus on brand, and a spend on marketing = more book buyers. A service organization could just as easily set this up -- publisher agnostic, paying back proportional ad revs to the participating publishers. Don't waste resources on re-creating what already exists Mr. Nigel Newton - leverage leverage leverage! Anyone need a business plan? (lol)

New Dogs, New Tricks from SXSW - BookShorts Conference Report

BookShorts.com -- Moderated by Scott Kirsner of CinemaTech, this was the first session I attended at SXSW and it set the bar high, at least in terms of a successfully moderated session. All too often at these kinds of things, the organizers do their best to get people on the dias who are well-regarded in their respective fields, but the context of the actual presentation, any useful information is either fragmented or has to be forcefully inserted into proceedings, which inevitably makes the person delivering seem like a shill. So, kudos to Scott, he is well-informed, up-to-date, and gave the panellists solid guidance through a cogent session.

A full report is available in this .PDF or at BookShorts.com/news.htm and here are some of the interesting comments from this collective braintrust that really does bare considered attention in the immediate future:

* iTunes made its first acquisition recently, a film whose duration was between 30 and 60 minutes which they priced at a TV-episode fee of 1.99 – watch to see if it leads to an ongoing initiative from the company most feel is in the best position to become the new power-player

* Watch the talent – they’ll develop properties that take more advantage of the attributes of the media they’re playing with, for instance, story-telling in environments like Second Life

* Break-out producers will use the behaviour differences of audiences on different platforms to create new economies, and help monetize content in ways particular to each

* Building strong characters is one of the most exciting aspects across all these modes of delivery; a distinct personality, whether fictional or real, has even greater opportunity to find exactly its niche audience in a multimodal distribution strategy; case study: Four Eyed Monster

* Micro-financing, or cinema shares, where audiences are invited to invest in films at the pre-production stage has an increasing number of precedents; although there are security laws that impact this type of financing, and some dud examples like One Second Film (will it ever actually come out?) in other sessions during SXSW the topic was broached repeatedly which several successful implementations (more on this next post).

Lots of food for thought, and practical tips from those who are walking the walk. I'll break it into blog-like bits and post over the next few days. Hit the feed :)

BookShorts OPINION: Online Video Gets Real

Good basic description of companies that host and distribute video - Revver, Metacafe -- where content is screened for quality, and put into a context where revenues are earned based on appeal and entertainment value to the audience. Here at BookShorts we agree with the editor that "eventually, viewers will get tired of watching silly video pranks and seek out more creative video material online." In the world of digital media, "eventually" is not often very far away.

BookShorts TV Airs Tonight! Moving Stories on BookTelevision

www.bookshorts.com -- If you can't get out of the country, you can still travel the world! ARMCHAIR JOURNEYS are in focus on Moving Stories TV; airing on BookTelevision Thursday, February 22, 8pm.

Our BookShorts TV series, Moving Stories, explores the process of filmmaking and adapting the printed word for a multi-media universe. The episode tonight focuses on the impact of film location, with directors of the dramatic short “What Casanova Told Me” by Susan Swan revealing the magic of re-creating 18th century Venice in downtown Toronto. In the doc “Confessions of a Pilgrim” Sue Kenney is transformed by her trek on the Camino, which she shot entirely on location in Spain.

JPod based on the novel by Douglas Coupland - BookShort Video Trailer

http://www.bookshorts.cm/ -- BookShorts, the production and distribution company specializing in short films based on books, in association with Vintage Canada, are thrilled to announce the world theatrical premiere of the 4-minute short film JPod. This short is based on the novel of the same name by international bestselling author Douglas Coupland; the book is now available in trade paperback.

The 4-minute JPod BookShort centres on Ethan Jarlewskis stunted efforts to win the amorous attentions of new girl Kaitlin Boyce, an unwilling recruit to the cult of video game programmers. Consummated with a kiss that is the epitome of modern love, Ethan indoctrinates Kaitlin into the amoral morass that is JPod.

South by Southwest Film Festival screens JPod Saturday, March 10**2007. For more info visit http://www.bookshorts.com/watch_jpod.htm .

Real Friends Know What Turn You On

It's one of those brand-marketers' dream days today. Total and ubitiqous branding come alive, demanding a tangible demonstration to your special someone. Could stressful, a disaster even, for the Valentine and the Valentine-e. Unless of course your Valentine knows you like my Strange Duck knows me. The V she sent me, that textual validation, that acknowledgement of things that get me up in the morning, make me stay up too late, that gets my heart racing. Yah, I'm one of the lucky ones. Everyone should have a Strange Duck.

BookShorts VIDEO: Neil Smith on BANG CRUNCH

Neil Smith in the person belies his personae on the page. Or perhaps that's just part of the eloquent deception that happens to be his self. Whether he is truely skewed or just skewers readers' expectations, his is an intriguing first collection.

Testament to Louise Denny's graceful guidance in developing talent through the New Faces of Fiction program, and to the finger-on-the-pulse talent of Knopf Canada whose publishers are Louise and Diane Martin, and to Michael Schellenberg who edited the work.  I concur with all of the 25 interviewers that Neil had spoken to by the time he did his reading from BANG CRUNCH at Toronto's Harbourfront series.

And happily, an author that cares enough to follow his theatrical muses to deliver a stage performance that engages as much as the writing. It's an easy segue onto the silver screen, Jaybird is just begging for a treatment.

Mr. Smith -- prepare for another 25 *hundred* interviews!

(and thank you Sharon, for setting us up :)
