THE VOLUME ONE PROJECT TAKES FLIGHT

Chris Reed and Natalie Kertes of Small Print launched THE VOLUME ONE PROJECT, a new workshop series for writers between 8-12 years old, at Humber College on Sunday November 22, 2009.
The Test Pilot session featured YA author Natalie Ghent and illustrator Evan Munday. Four young scribes (Bronwyn Cragg, Noam Flear, Sophia Jantzi and Sophie Chase) worked with Ghent and Muncday and created their very own books. What did they write about?

A Toronto man named Bob who skydives off the CN Tower only to crash into the spaceship of an Anarchist Alien from the planet I-Don't-Know. Future installments of The Volume One Project are planned fro early 2010. Stay tuned for details.

Amazon to launch Kindle in Canada

TORONTO (Reuters) - U.S. Internet retailer Amazon.com Inc said on Tuesday that it was introducing Kindle, its wireless electronic reader, in Canada.

Last month, the world's largest online retailer rolled out the Kindle internationally, but at the time Canada was excluded from its global launch.

Amazon -- which regards the Kindle as a pivotal growth driver -- said more than 300,000 books from a host of publishers as well as more than 90 periodicals, including Canadian newspapers the Globe & Mail and the National Post, would be available on the device.

The e-reader, which can store up to 1,500 books, uses the same 3G wireless technology as advanced cellphones to download content. The $259 device is available online and is ready to ship immediately, Amazon said.

The delay in the launch of the device in Canada had given rise to speculation that Amazon was, at the time, still working on finalizing an agreement with a wireless carrier in the country.

Seattle-based Amazon, which did not announce the name of the wireless carrier it will use in Canada, was not immediately available for comment.

Lynn Rosen Named Director of Graduate Publishing Programs Rosemont College

Rosemont, PA- Lynn Rosen, of Philadelphia, has been appointed Director of Graduate Publishing Programs at Rosemont College. An accomplished educator, writer, and editor, Rosen has published three books and has over twenty-five years of publishing experience. Most recently, Rosen has taught at Temple and Drexel Universities and has been active in organizing publishing and reading events in the Philadelphia region.

“Lynn is a stellar addition to our graduate program,” said Judith Rényi, Ph.D., Dean of Graduate and Professional Studies at Rosemont College. “She brings a great deal of talent and expertise to the College, and her leadership will ensure the continuing success of our students and faculty.”

In her new post, Rosen will be responsible for ensuring the curricular quality of existing programs, the development of new programs, and the success of recruitment, admissions, and student retention initiatives.

As an editor, Rosen has worked with publishers of adult trade non-fiction and illustrated gift books. She is the author of Elements of the Table: A Simple Guide for Host and Guests (Clarkson Potter) and the co-author of The Baby Owner’s Games and Activities Book, The Baby Owner’s Maintenance Log (Quirk Books), as well as several gift books and journals. Rosen has written freelance articles for the Book Review and the Home & Design sections of the Philadelphia Inquirer, and has written legal profiles for Young Lawyer and General Counsel Mid-Atlantic. She received an honors Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and a Master of Arts degree from Columbia University.

IPhone challenge to Kindle as book apps surge

The iPhone may take market share from the Amazon Kindle, following an explosion in the supply of book apps last month, according to a report by San Francisco-based mobile application analytics company Flurry.

The number of book apps supplied to the iPhone App Store overtook the number of games apps for the first time in September, Flurry reported.

Last week The Bookseller revealed that slow-moving publishers could be left out of the "explosion" in demand for the creation of book applications for the Apple iPhone and iPod Touch. Adam Martin, head of the interactive department at United Agents, said apps were a "game-changer" for authors and publishers. He warned that publishers needed to move "within the next six months". "If they are slow, they may get left out," he said.
